Building Maintenance Technician


13.50 per hour (£540 per week, paid monthly)
Monday – Friday, 08:00 – 16:30 (30-minute unpaid lunch break)

About the Role

We are looking for a practical, hands-on Building Maintenance Technician to support the upkeep of our office and facilities in Darlington.

This is a varied role where you’ll be responsible for maintaining a safe, clean and well-functioning working environment, carrying out day-to-day maintenance, and supporting health & safety compliance across the site.

Key Responsibilities

General Maintenance

  • Carry out minor repairs and general maintenance across the building

  • Tasks may include:

    • Replacing light bulbs and sensors

    • Basic plumbing repairs

    • Painting and decorating

    • Unblocking drains and toilets

    • Repairing furniture

    • Installing noticeboards and fixtures

  • Identify and report any major repair issues to management

Facilities & Site Upkeep

  • Maintain the cleanliness and condition of both internal and external areas

  • Ensure grounds, walkways and car parks are:

    • Free from hazards

    • Clear of litter

    • Safe in all weather conditions (including snow/ice clearance)

  • Manage general housekeeping standards across the premises

Health & Safety Support

  • Conduct routine inspections and checks, including:

    • Fire alarms

    • Emergency lighting

    • Fire extinguishers

    • Refuge points and safety alarms

  • Support compliance by reviewing contractor documentation (RAMS, certifications etc.)

  • Supervise contractors on site to ensure safe working practices

Additional Duties

  • Move furniture and equipment as required

  • Support recycling and environmental initiatives

  • Maintain records relating to inspections and compliance tasks

  • Assist with first aid where required and monitor first aid equipment

  • Be part of an on-call rota for building-related issues (when required)

  • Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested

Job requirements

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • Previous experience in building or facilities maintenance

  • Practical, hands-on approach with good problem-solving skills

  • Strong awareness of health & safety

  • Reliable and able to work independently

  • Basic IT skills (Word/Excel)

Desirable (but not essential)

  • IOSH or NEBOSH qualification

  • First Aid qualification

  • Fire Marshal training

  • PAT testing certification

  • Legionella Responsible Person training

  • Manual handling training
